Abduction – Moving a limb away from the midline of the body.
Achilles tendon – Prominent tendon attached to the calf belly to move the foot.
Adduction – Moving a limb toward the midline of the body.
Adherent Scar Tissue - Scar tissue formed in the healing process which sticks to the underlying tissue such as muscle, fascia or bone.
ADL – Activities of daily living.
Adolescent Scoliosis – Lateral spinal curvature that appears before the onset of puberty and before skeletal maturity.
Adult Scoliosis – Scoliosis of any cause which is present after skeletal maturity.
AFO - Ankle Foot Orthosis
AK – Above the knee relating to prosthesis or amputation, also known as Transfemoral.
Alignment – The orientation of a prosthetic socket in relation to the foot and knee components in all three planes.
Amputation – Removal of all or part of a limb.
Amputee – A person who with all or part of a limb amputated, or was born without a limb or part of a limb.
Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO) – An orthosis (brace) which is prescribed to support or control the ankle and foot.
Anterior – Toward the front of the body.
Atrophy – The reduction (shrinkage) in the size of a muscle/soft tissue, often from disuse.
