Sacrum Bone - Located at the base
of the spine. Consisting of five fused vertebrae known as
sacral vertebrae. The Sacrum articulates with the last lumbar
vertebra and laterally with the pelvic bones.
Scapula Bone - The bone known as the
shoulder blade on the back.
Scoliosis - Lateral curvature of the
spine, creating an S shaped spine.
Silesian Belt - A flexible belt which
can be used for suspension of a transfemoral prosthesis.
Single Axis Foot - A prosthetic foot
with only one pivot point which allows movement in one plane.
Socket - The portion of the prosthesis
with which the residual limb makes contact.
Soft Socket - The soft/flexible liner
located inside the socket to provide cushion.
Sound Side Leg - The opposite side
from the amputation or non-amputated limb.
Spasm - Involuntary muscle contraction.
Spinal Orthosis - An orthosis (brace)
which is prescribed to support or control the trunk of the
body.
Spondylitis - An inflammatory disease
of the spine.
Spondylolisthesis - An anterior displacement
of a vertebra on the adjacent lower vertebra.
Stance control knee - A prosthetic
knee component with a mechanism which increases the safety
and stability of the knee.
Static Alignment - Alignment of the
prosthesis while the patient is standing but not walking.
Stockinette - A tubular open-ended
cotton stocking.
Stroke - Rupturing of a blood vessel
in the brain.
Stump - Residual limb, the portion
of the limb remaining after amputation.
Stump Shrinker - An elastic compressive
wrap or sock that is applied to the residual limb to reduce
edema/swelling. This also used to shape the residual limb
during the first months after amputation.
Stump Sock - A sock knitted for amputees.
The sock is worn on the residual limb, inside the socket.
The sock is used for volume changes in the residual limb.
Example is as the residual limb shrinks more socks are added
or if the residual limb swells socks are removed. It is used
to reduce friction and to add additional padding for bony
prominences.
Suction Socket - Provides suspension
by creating a negative pressure or vacuum. This is done by
pushing the air out of the socket through a valve. Once the
air is evacuated the socket is sealed either with a valve
or sleeve.
Suspension - Holding a prosthesis
on during ambulation. There are different methods to accomplish
this by suction, sleeve, strap, belt, wedge or gel liner with
pin.
Suspension Sleeve - A flexible tube
that is placed over the knee and prosthesis to suspend a transtibial
prosthesis.
Syme's amputation - An amputation
through the ankle, also known as an ankle disarticulation
amputation. The amputation was named for the physician who
perfected the surgery. The bulbous end can sometimes bear
some weight.
