Paralysis - Inability to use muscles
due to nerve damage.
Paraplegia - Partial or complete paralysis
of both legs.
Paraplegic - An individual who has
paraplegia and is paralyzed from the waist down.
Patella - The bone making the kneecap.
Peripheral Vascular Disease - (PVD)
The disease of the small blood vessels located near the skins
surface.
Pes Planus - A foot with a low or
flat arch.
Phantom Pain - An abnormal painful
sensation in an amputated limb that is no longer present.
Pistoning - When the residual limb
moves slightly into and out of the interface of the prosthetic
socket.
Plantar - The bottom surface of the
foot.
Ply - The thickness of a prosthetic
sock.
Polycentric Knee - A prosthetic or
orthotic knee joint with more than one axis of rotation. This
increases the knee stability.
Posterior - Towards the back of the
body.
Post-operative Prosthesis - A prosthesis
which is fitted to the patient immediately following surgery.
Prehension - To hold or grasp.
Preparatory (temporary) Prosthesis -
An unfinished artificial limb designed to replace the amputated
limb. Fabricated and fit soon after surgery, to be worn while
the residual limb is healing and to accelerate the rehabilitation
process.
Primary Curve - The largest curve
(bend) in a spine with scoliosis.
Prognosis - Prediction of the medical
outcome. What might happen in the future.
Prostheses - The plural of prosthesis.
Prosthesis - (Artificial limb) A device
which replaces a missing body part.
Prosthetic Sock - A sock knitted for
amputees. The sock is worn on the residual limb, inside the
socket. The sock is used for volume changes in the residual
limb. Example is as the residual limb shrinks more socks are
added or if the residual limb swells socks are removed. It
is used to reduce friction and to add additional padding for
bony prominences.
Pylon - Pipe-like structure used to
connect the prosthetic socket to the foot/ankle components.
