Decompensation - In scoliosis,
this refers to the loss of spinal balance when the thoracic
region is not centered over the pelvis.
Decubitis - ulcer, pressure sore,
bed sore.
Definitive prosthesis - Permanent
prosthesis (artificial limb) that is designed and fitted after
the residual limb has healed and most of the changes in shape
and volume have occurred.
Desensitization - The process of making
the residual limb less sensitive to the touch.
Disarticulation - Amputation through
a joint, no bone is cut.
Discectomy - Removal of all or part
of an intervertebral disc (the soft tissue that acts as a
shock absorber between the vertebral bodies).
Distal - (when referring to a limb)
Away from the trunk, the part farthest from the body.
Doffing - The act of removing a prosthesis/orthosis
device.
Donning - The act of putting on a
prosthesis/orthosis device.
Double curve - Two lateral curvatures
(scoliosis) in the same spine. Double major curve describes
scoliosis in which there are two structural curves which are
usually of equal size. Double thoracic curve describes in
scoliosis when a structural upper thoracic curve, as well
as a larger, more deforming lower thoracic curve, and a relatively
nonstructural lumbar curve.
Dorsiflexion - The motion of the ankle
joint that raises the foot.
Drop-foot - The inability to dorsiflex
the foot (lift the foot).
Dynamic alignment - Patient ambulates
with the prosthesis on and adjustments are made to maximize
stability and function of the device.
