Cadence - The speed at which one walks.

Calcaneus - Heel bone.

Callous - Thickening of the skin.

Carpals - The bones between the metacarpals and the wrist.

Cast model - Rigid impression made of a body part using plaster or fiberglass wrap.

Cavus foot - A foot with a high arch.

Cerebral Vascular Accident - Rupturing of a blood vessel in the brain.

Ceritified Orthotist (CO) - A Certified Orthotist is certified by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics. To obtain this certification an individual must have adequate training in the field of orthotics and have successfully passed a national examination. Once certified the individual must meet the mandatory continuing education requirements. A Certified Orthotist is a patient-care practitioner who evaluates, designs, fabricates and fits orthoses (braces) and other devices to straighten or support the body and/or the limbs.

Certified Pedorthist (C. Ped) - A Certified Pedorthist is certified by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics. To obtain this certification an individual must have adequate training in the field of pedorthics and have successfully passed a national examination. A Certified Pedorthist is a patient-care practitioner who evaluates, designs, fabricates and fits pedorthic devices for the prevention of painful and/or disabling conditions of the foot and ankle.

Certified Prosthetist (CP) - A Certified Prosthetist is certified by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics. To obtain this certification an individual must have adequate training in the field of prosthetics and have successfully passed a national examination. Once certified the individual must meet the mandatory continuing education requirements. A Certified Prosthetist is a patient-care practitioner who evaluates, designs, fabricates and fits prosthetics (artificial limbs).

Certified Prosthetist and Orthotist (CPO) - This professional has successfully met the criteria of both Certified Prosthetist and Certified Orthotist.

Cervical vertebrae - The seven bones of the neck.

Charcot foot - A progressive degenerative condition that affects the joints in the foot.

Check socket - A socket, usually transparent, which is used to evaluate the comfort and fit of the socket before the fabrication of the temporary or permanent prosthesis. Also, known as test socket or evaluation interface.

Chopart - A partial foot amputation leaving only the calcaneus and talus intact.

Clavicle - The collar bone.

Coccyx - Distal portion of vertebral column. The tail bone.

Compound Fracture - A bone fracture which has broken through the skin.

Congenital Limb Deficiency - Absence of a limb or part of a limb at the time of birth.

Contracture - A shortening of a muscle.

Cosmesis - The appearance of a device.

Cosmetic Cover - The protective external cover that gives an endoskeletal prosthesis a normal anatomical appearance.
